The Project
We believe that Squarecrows is the coolest NFT project in history.
Some NFT projects have (justifiably) been described as a solution looking for a problem, and many others have been used to raise funds with little more than a vague promise to do something cool in the future.
Squarecrows is different in a number of ways.
How is Squarecrows different?
- Most NFTs do not extend further than their digital existence. We’re selling very real souvenir plots of beautiful Scottish land as NFTs. This solves two historic problems, which we will outline below.
- You can visit your plot of land any time. We use the world’s best and simplest location system to uniquely identify each of our plots. Our project bridges the gap between the digital and physical worlds in a unique way that no other project can.
- We already own the land we’re selling. You don’t have to wait for the project to take off and hope for the best.
So what problems are we solving?
1. Problem Solved - Ownership
If one word truly defines the ethos of Web3 and NFTs, it has to be ownership. Ownership just so happens to be the main reason for the existence of souvenir plots in Scotland. Such plots are, by definition, wanted for the sake of 'mere ownership'.
Souvenir plots are not new. They were legally defined in the Land Registration (Scotland) Act of 1979, and hundreds of thousands have been bought and sold ever since, usually as a 30cm x 30cm novelty gift.
Until now, these plots have been sold in a traditional way: a contract of sale between the buyer and seller which gives the seller a personal interest in the plot of land without becoming the registered landowner.
The problem with this method is that the buyer of the souvenir plot cannot sell that plot to a third party in the future. The contract has to be between the registered landowner and the souvenir plot owner.
Blockchain technology solves this problem beautifully. When you buy a souvenir plot as an NFT, the personal rights of ownership are tokenised in such a way that they can be held and enjoyed by whomever owns the NFT, regardless of how many times it’s sold.
2. Problem Solved - A Register of Transactions
As you might expect, Scotland has an official Land Registry, which is maintained by the Registers of Scotland.
Sales of souvenir plots have never been recorded in the Land Registry. The reason for this is a simple scarcity of resources:
”[a] scheme to sell off (say) 1,000 one-foot square plots and have registered the Titles thereto would employ the Keeper and his staff in a way which could be detrimental to the expeditious registration of the Titles of those whose interest was practical rather than sentimental or commemorative”.
Fair enough, but this is 2024, and you know what’s good at recording transactions? The blockchain! The blockchain will provide irrefutable proof of purchase and, for the first time, enable souvenir plot owners to transfer their plot to someone else.

Why are Squarecrows NFTs awesome?
The land we sell is in Glen Nant, a National Nature Reserve in Scotland. We are fortunate enough to own 130 acres of this wonderful land, which is known as Scotland’s Rainforest. According to Nature Scot (which is the national agency responsible for Scotland’s natural heritage), this rainforest is extremely rare on a global level.
Each plot we sell is 3m x 3m in size, and is uniquely defined using the groundbreaking What3Words location system.
